About Amanda Nixon

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela. Inspired by this quote, I have devoted 14 years of teaching to researching and implementing effective practices that develop world changers.

I believe students should be given opportunities to engage in activities that spark their curiosity, show off their talents, challenge their intellect, and bring them joy. These opportunities are created through classroom experiences that take them beyond curriculum guidelines, as well as through extra-curricular activities such as Destination Imagination, Perennial Math Club, newspaper, robotics, STEM, and arts and crafts clubs.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Memphis and went on to obtain my Masters of Education from Union University. I served as a Math coach for Shelby County Schools and the state of Tennessee. I had the honor of being selected as a Tennessee Educator Fellow for SCORE (State Collaborative on Reforming Education) and served as a curriculum writer for Shelby County Schools. Through these experiences, I developed practices to emphasize student-centered learning and advocate for all learners.

I live in Bartlett with my husband and three sons, Dylan, Noah, and Logan. In my spare time, she loves to go on adventures with her family, read, play games, and solve logic puzzles. I love to learn new things and hope to learn something new everyday.  I always wanted to work with children, and as a teacher I get to combine my passion for youth and knowledge at the same time!

Hi Mrs. Nixon I miss you so much !! I thought I was going to be one of the only kids at Appling, but i’m not! Garrett and Dylan are also here! 31. July 18th, 2017 at 5:17 pm       Matthew Russell Says:

Wow! It’s been a minute. I’m not even 100% sure how I came here. Anyhow, with the 5-6 years that’ve passed, it may take a minute for you to remember me. Anyhow, I’m going into my junior year of high school! The AP workload has already hit me.
I turned into a theatre kid :p, and am the secretary for the thespian society here, the master technician, all while acting on stage. So, if you ever get the chance you should come down and see one of our shows! We post all our show dates and info on @wp.playhouse on instagram!
Anyhow, Just thought of fifth grade for a bit and wanted to give you a life update!

  32. August 5th, 2017 at 7:32 pm       Amanda Nixon Says:

Matthew, how could I ever forget my sweet fifth grade students? I am so pleasantly surprised to hear that you are performing. Please let me know of any plays that I can attend, not only to I love going to the theater, I really love seeing my former students doing things they love. I will look at the website for dates and info. Great to hear from you and glad you are doing so well!
